THE YOUTH AND FOOD WASTAGE
Every day the world wastes a lot of food. Annually, the amount of food wasted is enormous. To be precise, a third of the food supply across the globe is left to rot. This results in major issues such as climate change and global warming. Saving food also saves money and time. It saves farmlands and the reduced need for agriculture would mean less habitat loss. So one can save animals just by saving food.
More than eighty percent of this wasted food comes from ordinary
households. Perhaps young people are to blame for most of the food wastage.
These youngsters prefer to buy and consume packaged food that although seems to
last its “best before” date, yet it is still completely perfect to be consumed.
These people take snacks which are wrapped in plastic, further harming the
environment. Fruits and vegetables just remain in the kitchen and rot until
they are no longer edible.
Unfortunately, all these issues may be no more than an allegation
against young people who at times prove to be more considerate than older
people or adults. They are made to feel guilty about world hunger and a
depletion of environmental resources. These people claim to be aware of the
global issues and do not require NGOs to make them aware of it. Packaged foods
are more likely to last than open foods. Young people are quite busy in
studying and socializing and prefer to grab fast food during their short breaks
rather than fruits. This means that they do not buy the fruit in the first
place. Much of the food does not even reach these young people because
companies only release foods that are “perfect”.
In conclusion, even though young people are blamed for major food
wastage, however at times they may be more considerate than a fully grown
adult. Yet, it is also true that they consume snacks that are packaged in
inorganic or non biodegradable materials. Less consumption of fruits and
vegetables also affects the agricultural sector. That is why young people
should try to change their tastes and preferences a little bit more.
