THE MIRAGE OF ONLINE GLAMOUR
In the dim
glow of late night scrolling it is easy to get lost in the perfect world of
social media to stop the screen lights out with flawless selfies, luxurious
vacations and stylish outfits. Influencers present your life like their
straight out of a dream making everyday life dull by comparison.
One notable
case is that of the late YouTube Rebecca “ Becca” Brown. Known for her vibrant
beauty tutorials in glamorous lifestyle belongs whose online persona was just
perfect. She showcased vacation luxurious shopping sprees, a picture perfect
life that seemed almost too good to be true. However, behind the dazzling
facade, Becca struggled with severe depression and anxiety. Her carefully
maintained social media presence was a contrast to her private battles which
she really discussed publicly.
Story came to
light after her untimely death which shocked her millions of followers and
spiked a broader conversation about the pressure of maintaining a flawless
online image.
Behind every
curated post there are ordinary moments and personal struggles that really make
it to the feed. Influencers like Ariana Grande and Jeffree Star have shared
their own struggles with anxiety and mental health revealing that behind the
filters and fleshy content day to face pressure and insecurities.
The quest for
perfection on social media can lead to unrealistic expectations and lower self
esteem seeing a seemingly perfect life everyday can make people feel inadequate
as if they are feeling because they don't measure up to this idealized version
of reality. This constant comparison can be damaging. To counter this, it is important to remember that social
media often shows just a highlight reel , not the full picture. Embracing
imperfections and celebrating our real experiences help us see the true beauty
in life!
